Yastık, meaning cushion in Turkish, is a store located both in Istanbul and London and specialises in selling luxurious cushions. What makes them unique are their exotic and lavish fabrics together with a unique mix of patterns, motives and embroideries from the Turkish and Central Asian culture. Istanbul-born founder Rifat Ozbek is a former fashion designer, who graduated from the famous Saint Martins College of Arts in London and was twice named designer of the year by the British Fashion Council. In 2005 he opened the store together with his partner Erdel Karaman. Their desire is to spoil with choice for this ultimate interior accessory. While the front side of the pillows are covered with eye-catching motives in bright hues and bold prints; there are more quiet patterns on the back that at the same time contrast and complement the front side. Inside each pillow there is dried lavender to diffuse trace of scent. In the store, the cushions are exposed like paintings on the wall as Özbek wants the shop to look more like a gallery and sees each piece of cushion as artwork. Each design is a limited edition and every season there is a new collection. As the motives are influenced by typical Anatolian and Turkish patterns, these cushions are perfect as a souvenir. And although it might be not everyone’s price range, the shop is definitely worth a look!
