Hidden in a corner of the lively Firuzağa Mahalessi lies Datli Maya, a small, rustic eatery that specializes in traditional Turkish cuisine such as “Lahmacun” and numerous stews and small dishes prepared in clay casseroles. After walking into the small shop you find yourself in a tiny room with a furnace, where the meals from the small but perfect menu are sizzling away. After walking into the second floor and through the kitchen, you can take a seat at one of the tables in the small dining room, which feels a lot more like the living room of a Turkish farm house than that of a restaurant. The delicious meals are brought to the table on wooden boards straight from the oven and garnished with fresh herbs and lemon. After (or before) the meal, you are invited to pour your own chai tea mixture from the Çaydanlık, two antique copper kettles.
The definition of a rustic and traditional restaurant – the type of place that would only work in a city like Istanbul. Arrive early to guarantee a table as reservations are, naturally, impossible.
